Abstract
A compact thermal relay is based upon a composite bimetallic sensor and switching transistor that provides improved temperature compensation and allows adjustment of response characteristics by changes in the heat transfer across heater and bimetallic surfaces. The semi-conductor disc (1) contains a transistor coupled thermally with the bimetallic element either by soldering or gluing (double line) the transistor is integrated with a Zener diode (Z1), a resistance (R3) and a diode (D2) to form a constant current supply. The voltage supply is coupled to the heating element in the form of the current supply, diode (D1), resistance (R1) zener diode (Z1) and protecting resistor (R2) for the transistor. The zener diode (Z2) together with resistor (R2) provides protection against unwanted voltage transients in the supply.
