Abstract
1,226,244. Automatic temperature control systems. SIEMENS A.G. March 21, 1969 [March 22, 1968], No. 14864/69. Heading G3R. A temperature control system has a bridge circuit including Zener diodes 5, 6 forming two arms and a temperature dependent resistor 1 forming one of the remaining arms, with a diagonal of the bridge connected to the emitter and base of a transistor 21 of one polarity type e.g. PNP the collector of which is connected to amplifying transistors 22, 23 of opposite polarity type i.e. NPN controlling heater current. Transistors 22, 23 are fed from the unsmoothed output of a fullwave rectifier 15 but the voltage across the bridge is smoothed by a capacitor 4 and decoupling diode 7. The system works in an on/off fashion the periodicity being adjusted by the thermal coupling between heater 14 and the temperature sensor 1. The arrangement is stated to be suitable for use with quartz crystal ovens and that the temperature variation of the crystal can be kept within Œmillidegree. By adjusting the thermal coupling between heater 14 and the temperature sensor the cycling time of the circuit may be varied up to 35-40 seconds. With such a period transistor 23 will become increasingly conductive over the first 5-8 seconds, be fully on for a further period after which it would switch off. Either P.T.C. or N.T.C. thermistors may be used for the temperature sensor, the latter giving a greater control accuracy.
