Abstract
A connection between a metal plate, fixed to the inner face of a concrete wall of an enclosure, and a metal pipe which passes through the concrete, is made by incorporating a reinforcing piece and a sleeve. The reinforcing piece is thicker than the metal plate is at the edge of the hole where the pipe is to be connected. The sleeve is made of a material with a high coefft. of elasticity. The reinforcing piece is fired by its external periphery to the edge of the hole and by its internal periphery to one end of the sleeve. The other end of the sleeve is joined to the pipe. The thickness of the sleeve decreases towards its junction with the pipe. The pipe is surrounded by a metal sheath where it passes through the concrete, and the space between the pipe and the sheath is filled with insualting material. The connection incorporates an annular element, with its inner edge fired to the pipe and its outer edge fired t a flange on the sheath so as to permit free expansion. Partic. useful in boiling water nuclear reactors in which the press. resisting casing is constructed of prestressed concrete. The invention overcomes the problems arising from uneven stresses at joints under excessive working conditions, where pipes pass through concrete into metal covers.
