Abstract

The drum brake has the drums mounted for ease of access and maintenance, outboard of the stub axles. In the actuating mechanism, the axis of the expander is at right angles to the axle and the expander can be mounted within the drum. The double-action expander is suitable for pneumatic, hydraulic, or electrical actuation. The piston housings, (4, 5) are rigidly mounted on either side of the stub axle (2) on the arms of the stirrup (3). Between them is mounted transversely and floating, the expander shown as a double-acting screw jack driven (19, 20) by an electric motor (18). The shafts (14, 15) of the jack are driven against the reaction of springs (23, 24) which equalise the jack effort on each brake shoe (6, 7).
