Abstract

A plastics coating is applied onto a glass vessel using aholder to support the vessel; two holders are used in succession, the first for supporting the glass vessel while it is in the coating zone, and the second for supporting it while it passes through the hardening zone. The first holder, after the vessel has been removed from it, is pref. then used for supporting a second vessel, esp. after the adhering plastics has been removed from the holder, in particular by blasting it with a gas or air jet. Used for modern coating procedures where a thin plastics coating is applied to a vessel, e.g. a bottle, to prevent crack initiation at the surface. The use of a separate holder for the vessel while it is passed through the hardening zone means that there is no holder which becomes progressively coated with ever thicker layers of hardened plastics. The coating is applied, e.g. as a powder, using electrostatic application of dry plastics. Where the vessel is a bottle, the holder grips it by the neck.
