Abstract

Yarn is tensioned by being passed through the nip of a pair of rollers, the surface of one of which is covered with an elastic matl. The sepn. of the rollers is adjustable to regulate the pressure exerted on the yarn as it passes through the nip and the yarn is so guided through the nip (e.g. by guides upstream and downstream of the nip) that the action of the yarn on the rollers rotates them. The tensioning device is used in e.g., spinning frames, horns, etc. Rotation of the rollers exerts a braking force on the yarn and so tensioning it. The device doesn't wear out as quickly as e.g. devices in which the yarn passes between a pair of discs biassed together. The braking force applied to the yarn is adjustable.
