Abstract

The pipe joint consists of an annular spacer made of a hard springy material and having radial undulations which are sinusoidal in form so that the peaks (24, 25, 26, 27) are in contact with one flange and the troughs (28, 29, 30, 31) in contact with the other flange. To prevent the undulations from flattening due to mechanical and thermal cycling during use, the undulations are formed with parallel or reentrant flanks (32, 33) so that compression or expansion of the joint does not cause the peaks and troughs to slide radially relative to the flanges. Wear is thereby greatly reduced and the life of the joint prolonged.
