Abstract

The engine has two pistons driving a common crankshaft. One piston operates on the two or four stroke cycle of an internal combustion engine and its cylinder is surrounded with a jacket containing a cooling liquid, with a boiling point higher than that of water. The liquid passes through the heat exchanger which generates steam to be supplied to the steam engine. The exhaust steam flows to the condenser and the condensed water is pumped to the heat exchanger by the pump. Another pump returns the cooling liquid to the engine. By utilising the exhaust heat to drive the steam engine the thermal efficiency of the power unit is considerably increased.
