Abstract

An adjustable tensioner for exerting a constant tension on a cable etc. the tension varying as a result of forces acting on the cable, comprises a cable-storage element with first means permitting take-up of the cable or of giving out slack and second means permitting the element to be locked in a given position such that the cable can no longer move. Used for underwater drilling and oil prodn, enabling the drilling pipe string or prodn riser pipe to be maintained under constant tension despite vertical variations in the length of the suspension system of 25 m or more without the need for excessively long stroke hydraulic actuators.
