Abstract

The voltage-controlled oscillator, for phase locked loops, has an array of capacitors switched by an array of capacitors switched by an array of switches to give a series of frequencies. A voltage-controlled varactor diode is used to tune the frequency. The values of the array of capacitors follow a binary sequence. The switches are formed by relays and the capacitors may be replaced, where appropriate, with inductors. The voltage controlled oscillator's output is coupled back via a divider to the second input of the phase comparator. A variable reactive installation has a row of capacitors (16-21) each switched in parallel by one of a row of switches (10-15). Preferably, the value of the capacitors is in a binary series.
