Abstract
The inverter is mainly intended for variable frequency supplies, for example motor drives, using a d.c. source which is typically derived from the a.c. mains via a rectifier. The inverter is commutated from the a.c. side, and is designed so that the thyristors can be fired and extinguished several times during one cycle of the a.c. system. The thyristors thus operate in a pulsed regine. By suitably adjusting the pulse intervals the current on the a.c. side is forced into a more sinusoidal waveform thereby helping to eliminate undesirable harmonics and in consequence improve performance. Capacitors are normally added on the a.c. side to further assist better performance.
