Abstract

1,190,847. Inverting; synthesizing sine waves; control of A.C. motors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 10 April, 1968 [14 April, 1967], No. 17353/67. Headings H2F and H2J. Control signals are derived by comparing the instantaneous value of a sine wave with that of a higher frequency triangular wave and operating switching devices where the instantaneous value of one wave exceeds that of the other. The invention is applicable to control of speed of a reluctance type synchronous motor by variation of the frequency of the sine wave, referred to above, and corresponding variation of the frequency of an inverter (Fig. 1, not shown) comprising a three-phase bridge of thyristors having inverse diodes and commutating circuits comprising centre-tapped inductors, bridged thyristors and commutating capacitors. The output of the inverter is pulsewidth modulated in such a way that the effective output is proportional to the frequency. Triggering thyristor inverters.-Fig. 2 shows the generation of trigger pulses for the inverter thyristors. Trigger devices 43 are switched each time the instantaneous value of a constantfrequency triangular waveform 71, Fig. 6, from generator 41 exceeds that of a variable frequency sine wave 72 from generator 38, giving a resulting waveform 73 which is inverted at 46 to give waveform 74, the two waveforms being fed to thyristor control units 45, 47 which provide a train of thyristor firing pulses at each step. The resulting output from the inverter is shown at 75. The motor speed is reduced by reducing the frequency and amplitude of the sine wave 72 from generator 38. This has the effect of altering waveform 73 in such a way that the negative and positive half-cycles of the pulse-width modulated output become more nearly symmetrical so as to reduce the output current as the frequency is reduced. Synthesizing sine waves.-Fig. 3 shows a system suitable for use as generator 38 for providing a variable frequency three-phase sine wave from a variable frequency pulse generator 61. Pulses from 61 are fed to an 18-stage ring counter and to a frequency/voltage converter 63 which biases limiting diodes so that the outputs from the ring counter are proportional to frequency. The outputs of the ring counter are coupled via summing resistors 69 to three integrating amplifiers 66, resistors 69 being weighted so that the outputs from amplifiers 66 are substantially sinusoidal and displaced in phase by 120 degrees and at a frequency determined by a control signal 62 which determines the frequency of the pulse generator 61.
