Abstract
1532037 Inverters BORG-WARNER CORP 8 June 1976 [27 June 1975 30 June 1975] 23683/76 Heading H2F A bipolar inverter circuit comprises four bidirectional power switches 55-58 connected as shown to a pair of bus conductors 64, 65 and a load 60, and means (not shown) for so regulating the opening and closing of the power switches that energy is supplied to said load whether a D.C. voltage of either polarity, or an A.C. voltage, is applied to the bus conductors. Each switch may be a triac, a pair of antiparallel thyristors, Fig. 8 (not shown), or a diode bridge having a thyristor connected across a diagonal, Fig. 9 (not shown). In the latter arrangement, each thyristor may have a commutating circuit as described with reference to Fig. 10 (not shown) or each pair of thyristors may have a complementary commutating circuit as described with reference to Figs. 16 and 17 (not shown). Fig. 7 shows a bipolar inverter for supplying an A.C. voltage to a load 22, the inverter being energized by an induction machine 20 and the switches 55-58 being switched by a logic unit 37 which receives timing signals from a modulated oscillator 40. A three-phase arrangement may be provided, Fig. 10a (not shown). The bipolar inverter may be used in a regenerative mode as shown in Fig. 12 or as a frequency converter as shown in Fig. 13.
