Abstract

gamma, delta-unsatd. -alpha-hydroxycarboxylic esters R1-CH=CH-CH(R2)-CH(OH)-COOR3 (I) where R1 and/or R2 = H or 1-20C alkyl (opt. substd. with inert substituents) or 6-20C aryl gp. and R3 = (opt. substd.) 1-20C alkyl gps., are made by reacting an olefin R1-CH=CH-CH2R2 (II) with a glyoxylic acid ester OHC-COOR3 (III) or a hemiacetal ROCH(OH)-COOR3 (IV) where R is the residue of a short chain aliphatic alcohol. Reaction proceeds in high yield. Prods. (I) are useful intermediates, e.g. in the prodn. of sorbic acid.
