Abstract
propyl acrylate (I) is prepd. by adding glycidol slowly and with stirring to an acrylic acid of formula R1R2C=C(R3)COOH (II) at 80-120 degrees C, in the presence of a polymerisation inhibitor and an organic base. In the formula, R1 and R2 are each H, halo, lower alkyl or aryl; and R3 is H, hydrocarbyl or halo. (I) is obtd. in improved yields (e.g. 96.5%) and needs little or no purification. (I) is used for prepg. resins for dental prothesis, heamodialysis membranes, transparent prods. etc.
