Abstract

The esters of formula: <IMAGE> In which R represents a C1-C6 alkyl, are obtained by reaction of a triphenylisopropylphosphonium halide with an acetal (C1-C4 alkyl-X)2- CHCH=CH-COOR in the presence of a strong base, followed by an acid hydrolysis. From these esters, it is possible easily to prepare, by saponification, (3R, 3S, 1R, 1S)-2,2-dimethyl-3-formylcyclopropane-1- carboxylic acid, a valuable intermediate in the synthesis of pyrethrinoid-type insecticides.
