Abstract

In process carried out at atmos pressure particulate oxidic material is treated in a first zone at 950 degrees - 1100 degrees C with titanium halide in the presence of carbonaceous reducing agent; the evolved iron halide is separated and then reacted with at least part of the solid residue in a second zone at 1100 degrees - 1800 degrees C in the presence of a carbonaceous reducing agent, to produce a dense phase of metallic iron and titanium halide, at least a part of which is recirculated to the first stage. Pref. the second stage temp. is >1535 degrees C to produce molten iron, while the halide vapour stream leaving the first reactor may be purified before entering the second stage.
