Abstract

A method of engraving marble consists of printing the surface of the slab with an ink soluble in alkali and resistant to hydrochloric acid using a lithographic ink described as 'A/S acid resist white XZ1', then drying the ink at a temperature between 40 and 50 deg. C for about 12 minutes. A fine spray of about 30% hydrochloric acid in water is then applied to the printed surface, which is facing downwards, at a temperature between 27 and 45 deg. C depending on the material, for between one and several minutes. The surface is the washed with a solution of about 5% caustic soda in water with fine sprays to eliminate the ink, followed by a final washing with water and drying with compressed air. Apparatus for conveying the slabs above a heated acid bath is shown for heavy slabs and an alternative design for lighter slabs.
