Abstract
This instrument package release mechanism separates the package (26) from a supporting balloon (B), either on command from the ground or automatically if the balloon bursts. It consists of a clamp (1) and release (2). The clamp is formed from two half rings (5, 6) held together by explosive bolts (7, 8) and clamping the neck of the balloon around two opposed conical elements (3, 4). A shaft connects the clamp to the release housing (9) and the load is supported on a shaft (10) which actuates microswitches (12, 13) via a lever against a pre-determined spring load (16). After take off, the switch (13) is latched closed. Reduction of the load below the preset value then closes switch (12) and fires the explosive bolts.
