Abstract
Refining catalysts of cobalt and/or nickel and molybdenum oxides on alumina as carrier, in which the carrier contains 3-15 wt.% chromium oxide. The catalyst is used in the hydro-desulphurising of petroleum fractions contg. asphaltenes and organo-metallic cpds., esp. vacuum gas oils and distillation residues. Activity and useful life of the catalysts are improved, and refining can be carried out under milder conditions. The carrier is ppted. from an aq. soln. of Al sulphate and Cr sulphate at 60-95 degrees C and pH 6.5-8.5, opt. dried and calcined. Metal oxides of sub-group 8 (pref. 2.5-5 wt.%) and subgroup 6 (pref. 5-13 wt.%) are then incorporated as usual e.g. by impregnating the dried carrier with ammoniacal solns. of Ni or Co molybdate, or mixing these with the moist carrier paste.
