Abstract
Concrete is cooled by adding liquid N2 during mixing of the aggregate and cement with water, pref. by spraying it into the mixer. In addition, the aggregate and/or cement may be cooled with liquid N2 prior to mixing. Temp. is thus reduced by approx. 10 deg.C without the occurrence of localised freeze phenomena. A period of 1-2 mins. is completely sufficient for the process. The process requires less expenditure on site than the method of adding pounded water ice, as only an insulated tank for the liquid N2 and a supply pipe to the mixer need to be installed.
