Abstract

Antigel compsn. comprises a hydrophobe such as calcium stearate and an accelerator such as sodium nitrite opt. with added paraformaldehyde; it is added to the concrete mix at a rate of 1-4%. The additive compsns. pref. contains 1-15% of hydrophobe. Other possible-hydrophobes include stearates of Na, K, NH4, glycol, Al, Mg, or amines and microcrystalline waxes etc. The hydrophobe inhibits the circulation of liquid in the concrete so that on freezing a continuous network of ice cannot form so as to crack the concrete. The sodium nitrate, by accelerating the set in known manner also tends to form two phases, one of ice, and one of liquid contg. nitrite so that since no gel forms then is reduced chance of crack formation.
