Abstract

The light sources are accommodated in the sphere, which is mounted on a vertical tubular mast. The sphere is divided into two hemispheres fitting together along a horizontal line, and means are included for raising the top hemisphere clear of the bottom one. Typically this can be achieved by a screwed rod sliding in the mast in guides so that it cannot rotate, attached to the top hemisphere, and a nut rotating on the rod under the action of a drive mechanism. The nut can have an external gear ring meshing with a pinion turned by a hand crank.
