Abstract
The permeability of subterranean formations penetrated by wells is improved by (a) injecting a fracturing fluid into the formation, and (b) injecting into the fractures a fluid contg. an alumina-based propping agent with a particle dia. of >=0.54mm. so as to form a compacted multilayer of the propping agent. Unlike conventional propping agents (e.g. sand), the alumina-based partiles do not become ground down when exposed to high pressures (up to 108Pa). The propping agent pref. contains 60-99% alumina (esp. alpha-Al2O3) and 0.1-40% silica, and has an apparent density of >=2.8 (esp. 3,4-3.9)g/cm3. The fracturing pressure is pref. >=5.6 x 107 Pa.
