Abstract
Concrete structures reinforced with a matrix of horizontal and vertical metal rods and with helically twisted strips of metallic mesh, where the matrix concrete is laid up in thoroughly consolidated layers which incorporate polypropylene fibres, is used in the construction of strong rooms, fortifications etc. at risk from mechanical, thermal or explosive assault. Presence of polypropylene fibres modifies the shockwave propagation characteristics of the concrete to better match the characteristics of the metal components, to reduce the risk of out-of-phase shock propagation generating sufficient interfacial tension to separate the components and induce large scale cracking.
