Abstract

Composite panels are made by coating a mixt. of expanded glass and polystyrene beads with a liquid catalyst, adding some particulate mineral filler and phenolic resin, and then consolidating the mix. with sufficient heat and pressure to fuse the expanded polystyrene beads into a continuous matrix enclosing the hollow glass spheres and bound by cured thermosetting resin. Used for mfr. of structural panels which are fire-resistant and offer fairly good thermal and acoustic insulation relatively cheaply. Pref. the mineral filler is a hydrophillic material, specifically calcium sulphate, to accommodate in situ water produced by the resin.
