Abstract

Existing four-stroke cycle piston engines produce a depression in the cylinder at the end of the expansion stroke when the throttle is only partly open. The invention proposes the installation of a third valve which functions as a vacuum suppression valve which opens towards the end of the expansion stroke and allows atmospheric air to enter the cylinder and suppress the vacuum. The valve has a shaft which is surrounded by two springs which urge the valve against its seat. One of the springs strongly urges the valve against its seat and is inoperative during the depression part of the cycle such that the depression can raise the valve against the light pressure of the second spring.
