Abstract

An appts. for ultrafiltration of small quantities without loss has an upper and a lower chamber with a filter membrane between them. The upper chamber can be put under a high pressure by introducing a gas. The lower chamber is maintained at a low pressure. There is an agitator in the upper chamber. The filter membrane lies on a support. the upper face of which is corrugated, the corrugation forming a continuous circular channel. One end of the channel is connected to the lower chamber by a small dia. tube. The other end is connected to a blower which incorporates a hand controlled tap by which a source of gas under pressure can be connected to the end of the gutter for clearing. Filtrate is collected in a cup which stands in a drawer in the lower chamber. The agitator motor is in the upper chamber and is fitted with a disc with slits operating in conjunction with a photoelectric cell to control the speed. The upper chamber is thermostatic. The appts. allows excellent filtration to be achieved without a significant loss of material and allows very small quantities to be treated. It avoids loss of gas-tightness which could occur if the agitator shaft passed through the case of the upper chamber. It is easier to use and more efficient and gives a better filtrate than existing appts.
