Abstract

Lubricating compsns. suitable for lubricating gears (e.g. hypoid gears) comprise na) a lubricating oil and (b) a combination of sulphur and a VI improver. Component (b) improves the extreme-pressure properties of the oil, giving greatly increased seizing points in the 4-ball test. The VI improver is pref. a dispersant-type VI improver, esp. an oil-soluble polymethacrylate, polyisobutylene, olefin copolymer, polystyrene or styrene copolymer. Component (b) is pref. prepd. by adding S to the VI improver (opt. dissolved in the oil) and heating the mixt. at 70-120 degrees C. The S is pref. added in an amt. of 1-10% of the wt. of the VI improver, and the concn. of the latter in the lubricant compsn. is pref. 1-90 wt. %. Component (a) is pref. a mineral oil.
