Abstract
Mould for mfg. castings of refractory material, contains a core which is compressed or collapses due to the shrinkage of the melt during cooling. The core contains a clearance hole for an insert which is located at a predetermined distance from the inner wall of the hole; when the mould is filled, the insert initially prevents the core from shrinking inwards due to the presence of the melt but it does not hinder the subsequent compression and/or collapse of the core during the solidification and contraction of the casting, and thus tensile stresses leading to the formation of fissures are avoided. Both the core and the insert are pref. tapered and fit into recesses in the mould walls. Used for the mfr. of hollow refractory parts, e.g. for blast-furnaces mfg. steel, or melting furnaces. The core retains its shape long enough to provide an accurate hole but then collapses so tensile stresses are not generated round the core.
