Abstract

Porous diaphragm for an electrolytic cell is mfd., from several sheets of PTFE contg. a filler, by melting a fluorinated polymer transformable to the molten state, in the juxtaposed edges of these sheets, at a temp. which does not produce decompsn. of the filler material in the sheets; solidifying the fluorinated polymer so as to assemble the sheets together, and finally extracting the filler material from the juxtaposed sheets. Diaphragms of desired shape and dimension can be mfd., esp. suitable for electrolysis cells operating with alkali metal chloride solns.
