Abstract

The two pairs of arms (16, 18) each contains some wedge-shaped segments, so that they bend when tightened along their inner surfaces, and straighten when the tension is released. When the motorist sits in the seat, the lower pair of arms bend round to hold the pelvis, whilse the upper pair bend over the shoulders to meet across the upper chest. The pads on the chest contain an air bag, partitioned into two, with a valve in the partition; the extra pressure of the chest on the pads when the motorist is thrown forward in a crash, drives the air through the valve into the upper part of the bag; this then provides a restraint for the forward-moving head.
