Abstract

Bacterial cells are treated, esp. to extract peptidoglycanes, by adjusting pH of medium to provoke autolysis in absence of added enzymes. Partic. applicable to gram-negative bacteria; cytoplasmic cell matl. is selectively destroyed. Yields and purity are higher than in known methods using enzymes. Pref. cells are used when they are in the logarithmic growth rate region. Prod. can be treated with proteolytic enzyme and pH is below 5 or above 9, pref. above 10.
