Abstract

Process for mfg. castings for thermal insulation comprises (a) inserting into a mould cavity a flexible, semi-finished ceramic product with a smooth surface, an elastic modulus of 200-5000 kg/mm2, bending strength 8-200 kg/cm2, a wall-thickness below 1/4 of its bore dia., and (b) casting molten metal into the mould to provide a jacket round the ceramic product. The metal is pref. grey cast iron, nodular iron, special cast iron, cast steel, or alloys based on Al, Cu, Mg or Zn; and the ceramic is pref. made from matl. with max. grain size below 3/4 of the min. wall-thickness of the semi-finished product. Prod. is used in internal bomsution engines and in devices for purifying the exhaust gas from such engines, to obtain complete combustion before the exhaust gas enters the environment.
