Abstract

Finely divided oil is removed from effluent water by (a) adding >=1 oxide or hydroxide of Ca, Mg, Al, Zn, Fe or Ti to adsorb and/or coagulate the oil, (b) adding >=1 acid or alkali as solvent to dissolve the adsorbent cpd. and to liberate the oil in the form of large particles and nc) removing the liberated oil from the effluent water. Can be used to treat effluent waters contg. oil in emulsion form stabilised with an anionic surface active agent.
