Abstract

Certain gases, e.g. CH4, C2H6 etc are stored in liq. form in double walled tanks in which the insulation between the walls is continually purged with inert gas such as N2 to prevent any leakage of cold product from reaching the outer structural wall. By compression and recycling of the purge gas, any leakage of product into the purge gas may be recovered in gaseous form for subsequent use as full or for re-liquefaction and storage. Based on a N2 purge flow of 1000 litres/hour containing 2% CH4, redn. to 0.64% CH4 may be achieved with a condensing rate of 13.6 libres/hour of CH4. Process is used for the recovery of production in liq. gas storage systems for land or marine application. Permits recovery of gas for full or other use with recycling of inert purge gas.
