Abstract

The tensioned caterpillar track system is used for laying submarine pipes. The upper and lower parts of the track (22, 23) pass over a series of freely turning jockey wheels (12) which are themselves supported on vertical slides (11). The slides run in guides in the frame (1) and pressure is applied to each via a hydraulic jack (17). All jacks on each half of the track are connected in parallel, so that the same pressure is applied at each point of the pipe, even if the latter should have sections of differing diameters. Hydraulic accumulators maintained under pressure by a pump, cater for large volume fluctuations and may be supplemented by compressed gas cylinders.
