Abstract

The parent patent described a prosthetic knee joint design and the enclosure of said joint in an artificial limb which either had a continuous casing of flexible foam or involved sliding joint covers of complex curvature. The patent of addtn. describes an alternative pattern for the cosmetic covers for a prosthetic knee joint where the covers comprise two complementary profiles which can move concentrically about a common acis. One part comprises a curved hollow shell made of reinforced polyester resin and suspended from the femoral plate associated with the base of the upper part of the joint. The other part is a smaller curved polyester profile which caps the upper part of the lower limb. The two profiles can pass close to each other as the joint is flexed and straightened. The modified cover design is simpler to make than the original split cover design.
