Abstract

P-xylene and/or methyl p-toluate are oxidised with an oxygen contg. gas at 80-250 pref. 130-180 degrees C and 1-200 pref. 2-20 ats. pressure in the presence of a catalyst contg. (a) Co or a cpd. of Co (b) Mn or a cpd. of Mn and c Cu or a cpd. of Cu. The Co concn. in the reaction medium is pref. 10-1000, pref. 50-500 ppm and the Mn and Cu concns. are pref. each 1-100 ppm. pref. 5-50 ppm. The Cu is pref. complexed partic. as Cu phthalocyanine. Terephthalaic acid is used for prepg. polyesters. The catalyst gives higher yields and a faster reaction time.
