Abstract

Flat glass mfr. in a regenerative furnace heated over its entire length, with an inlet for the frit and min. five burner openings along its length. Plus a refining zone which is shallow that the melting zone in which the frit swims initially on the bath. Below 50% of the total fuel is fed through the first three burner-openings very near the inlet end, and >=50% of the total fuel is fed through the remaining burner openings so that the temp. in the refining zone is maintained in a suitable range to convey the glass for making an endless flat sheet. Pref. 40% of the total fuel is fed through the first three burners and >=60% through the remainder and the total aire for combustion is pref. the 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. Used e.g. for mfr. of crystallisable glass used for semi-crystalline stove tops. Controlled temp. and convection currents are obtd. in the furnace.
