Abstract
Novel process for prodn. of a potato starch prods., useful as a feedstuff for animals or humans, by subjection of potato starch of degree of hydration up to 40 wt% to cooking-extrusion process in the absence of steam and recovering the prod. after drying and grinding to obtain a powder which is able to be directly added to animal or human foodstuffs. The powder pref. contains 10-20% residual water. The screw of the extrusion machine may be heated by induction or by electrical resistance. The residence time of the starch in the extruder is pref. 30 secs-3 mins., the entry zone is pref. at room temp. the die temp. 70-230 degrees C, partic. 160-230 degrees C and the extruder body temp. is pref. 30-80 degrees C. For commercial starch of 10-20% water content the extrusion temp. pref. is less than 200 degrees C. Conversion of non-digestable starch into a utilisable form, of partic. use for the feeding of young calves. The linear oligosaccharides formed are useful for treating human or animal organisms deficient in isomaltase since the prod. is more digestable than known commercial prods.
