Abstract

Biological ensilation of plant and/or animal material takes place by adding (A) lactic-aicd forming, acid-tolerant Streptococcus faecalis species bacteria (I) and at least one of following materials: (B) fermentable carbohydrates, (C) materials which decompose starch into fermentable carbohydrates and (D) lactic acid-forming starch-decomposing Streptococcus or Leuconostoc bacteria (II). (I) are obtd. by repeated cultivation in a medium having pH 4-4.7 (4.5). (II) are esp. Streptococcus lactis and Leuconostoc mesenteroides, prepd. by repeated cultivation in a medium contg. starch as the only C-source. Prods. can be used as feedstuffs for farm and domestic animals and poultry. Prods. contg. suitable starting materials, e.g. fish fillets or raw cut-up fish, may be used for human consumption. (i) Prod. quality can be improved. Lactic acid concn. can be increased, e.g. from 0.1 to 3.6 wt. %. Ratio NH3-N: total N can be reduced, e.g. from 35.6 to 11.5%. (ii) Ensilaging of animal raw material may be effected with only 1-6 wt. % carbohydrate addn.
