Abstract

Sulphur-curing elastomer compsns. which cure at > ca 190 degrees C comprise 100 pts. of a sulphur-vulcanisable copolymer of ethylene, propylene and a non-conjugated diene, 1-20 pts. of a chlorine-contg. polymer with labile Cl atoms and 1-20 pts. ZnO. Compsns. can be cured at high temps. for relatively short cure times (e.g. 10 mins.) to give vulcanisates with good physical props., thus giving considerable cost savings on the vulcanisation process. The Cl-contg. polymer may be e.g. chlorosulphonated polyethylene (25-45 wt. % Cl), polychloroprene (35-45 wt. % cl), chlorinated polyethylene (5-50 wt. % cl), chlorinated paraffins (5-80 wt. % Cl), and chlorined isobutylene/isoprene copolymers (Cl content 1-4 wt. %). The compsns. also contain 0.5-3 pts/100 pts. EPDM, of known sulphur-contg. vulcanising agents, together with 50-350 pts. furance black and other additives such as CaO, mineral oils, pigments, mineral fillers etc.
