Abstract

1400666 Olefin copolymer rubber-bitumen compositions RUTGERSWERKE AG 16 Feb 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 7787/73 Headings C3N and C3P Vulcanized compositions are prepared by vulcanizing a blend comprising (1) an ethylene/ propylene copolymer rubber and (2) up to 100 p.h.r. of a bitumen having a ring and ball softening point not less than 25‹ C. and less than 60‹ C. and a penetration of 45 to 600 1/10 mm. The rubber may be a terpolymer, e.g. with ethylidene norbornene. The bitumen may be a blended, oxidized, extraction or vacuum bitumen. The compositions may also comprise plasticizing oils, fillers and other vulcanizable rubbers, e.g. butyl rubber. The bitumen may be premixed with an ethylene copolymer, e.g. an ethylene/butyl acrylate copolymer. The compositions may be moulded and vulcanized to form tear resistant sheets. Examples describe compositions comprising mixtures of ethylene/propylene/ethylidene norbornene copolymers, carbon black, zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur and vulcanization accelerator together with (2-4) silicic acid, calcium carbonate, naphthenic oil and bitumen, (6 and 7) butyl rubber, naphthenic oil and bitumen, (9) naphthenic oil and bitumen, (10) bitumen and (11) a mixture of bitumen and ethylene/ butyl acrylate copolymer.
