Abstract

1400800 Epihalohydrin polymer/diene-nitrile copolymer composition POLYSAR Ltd 18 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 58244/72 Headings C3P and C3R A sulphur vulcanizable elastomeric composition comprises an epihalohydrin polymer and a crystalline alternating copolymer of a conjugated diene and an acrylic nitrile wherein the diene component comprises 40-100 mole per cent of a 2-alkylalkadiene, the copolymer having an X-ray crystallinity of 5-35% when unstretched, and the composition being free of vulcanizing agents for the epihalohydrin polymer. Other conventional rubber additives such as carbon black, ZnO, stearic acid, antioxidants and accelerators, e.g. benzothiazyl disulphide, may also be included. Exemplified polymers are a polymer of epichlorohydrin and a copolymer thereof with ethylene oxide, and copolymers of acrylonitrile with isoprene or isoprene and butadiene which are prepared using a Et 2 AlCl/acrylonitrile/VOCl 3 catalyst in methylene chloride solution.
