Abstract

Mechanical aerator which agitates the surface of a liquid comprises a horizontal, power-driven, rotary shaft carrying coaxial discs partly immersed in the liquid; the discs are arranged in two sets of equal number, each set occupying half the effective shaft length on opposite sides of its mid-point; within each set the discs are spaced, parallel to each other and pivoted to be adjustably inclinable to the shaft axis, the two sets being mechanically linked for simultaneous and symmetrical inclination in opposite directions by actuation of a common control. Each disc is pref. indented around its circumference with sharp teeth, is pivoted on a pin passing through the axis of the shaft and is pivoted by action of a slide bar linking all discs of a set to a powered actuator. Used for agitating the surface of a liquid, partic. polluted effluent undergoing aerobic biological purifn. which requires a degree of aeration. A controlled rate of aeration is obtainable simply by altering the angle of inclination of the agitator discs, eliminating the need to start and stop the agitator.
