Abstract
Freshly extruded large bore thermoplastic pipe is mfd. into preset lengths, with socket and chamfered spigot ends for head-to-tail assembly, using a saw which cuts pieces from the end of the chilled extrudate to lengths controlled by detecting the distance of the leading end of the profile from the point at which the saw begins to intercept the pipe wall. The cut lengths are automatically lifted aside to a cradle parallel to but offset from the extrusion axis. While on the cradle, buffing wheels shape one end of the cut section to produce a chamfered spigot, while concentric heating elements soften the other end of the tube. The partially fabricated end is then transferred to a second cradle parallel to the first cradle bu offset still further from the extrusion axis. The pipe waste is gripped on the second cradle while the preheated end is formed by a suitable mandrel to the required socket profile. The operation of socket forming, chamfering and sawing are automatically applied simultaneously to successive lengths of the pipe. The finished lengths are automatically off-loaded from the second cradle. Process is esp. suitable for fabricating 125-500 mm. dia. pipe. Integrated conversion of matl. to finished lengths of pipe of reproducible length is obtd. independently of the rate of extrusion of the profile.
