Abstract
Aromatic aldehydes are prepd. by reaction of a halomethyl aromatic cpd. with dil. HNO3 in the presence of a surface-active agent. The halomethyl cpd. may substd. on the nucleus by alkyl or halo gps. e.g. halomethyl derivs. of toluene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, ortho- meta and para-xylene, mesitylene, pseudocumene, durene, isodurene, anisole, phentole and chlorobenzene. Polycyclic aromatic cpds. may also be used e.g. of naphthalene and anthracene types. The surface-active agent is anionic cationic, ampholytic or non-ionic esp. alkali metal and ammonium salts of fatty acids, long chain-alkyl sulphates, alkylaryl sulphonates and non-ionics having a hydrophilic lipophilic equilibrium greater than 8. A sufficient amt. of the surface-active agent is used to emulsify the reaction medium. The concn. of the HNO3 is pref. less than 20% wt. and reaction is pref. effected at b.pt. A nitrite may also be added to the reaction mixt. Increased yields of pure aldehydes are obtd. by a fast reaction which is non-pollutant. The very selective reaction avoids the prodn. of oxidised by-prods. i.e. carboxylic acids.
