Abstract

5-Norbornene 2,3-dicarboxylic acid anhydride (pref. contg. 97% exo-isomer) is oxidised with 50-70 wt. % nitric acid for 2-5 hr. The ratio nitric acid to anhydride is 8:18:1. The product is the isomer of m.pt. 158 degrees C. The product is used to prepare water-soluble alkyd resins, stable in electrodeposition media. Higher yields are obtd. in shorter times.
