Abstract

An expansion joint for mixing together two sections of the wearing surface covering two adjacent sections of a carriage way are improved by a rubber plate or block provided on both its opposite faces with transverse grooves Two longitudinal heels on its underside have a rectangular trapezium form in transverse section, each heel being inserted by means of moulds in a longitudinal guide channel cut out in a pre-fabricated element intended to fixed on its upper face to the corresponding joint section near the longitudinal edge. The pre-fabricated element consists of a plastic body pref. polyurethane preformed by compression moulding. The use of a plastic pre-fabricated element in place of the reinforced concrete element originally proposed, in addition to being cheaper, is only about 1/10 of the weight, is resistant to e.g. antifreeze used in winter and is more easily placed in position as well as being able to be levelled to match the varying thickness of the bituminous road surface while it is being positioned.
